In 1993 the world was introduced to Roshal Archive, or RAR – a proprietary archive file format that supports data compression, error recovery and file spanning. It was developed by Russian software engineer, Eugene Lazarevich Roshal, but the copyright for the file format is held by his brother Alexander.

Two years later, we got WinRAR – a file archiver utility for Windows, which would be used to create and view archives in RAR or ZIP file formats, and also unpack a whole bunch of other archive file formats.

WinRAR is distributed as a ”try before you buy” software. According to the terms of use, you can use it for free during a 40 day trial period, after which you are required to buy a license.

However, if you ever used WinRAR, you know that you can continue using it for free even after the 40 day trial period ends.

  1. Thanks CHM Tech for explaining our business model in such an amusing and educational way! And of course thanks for purchasing the only license we ever sold, we are still celebrating it 😉

  3. WinRar and 7z violate the security principle "Less is More" aka "Increasing the Attack Surface is Not Good". That is, nowadays, most consumers DO NOT care about compression speed and marginal savings in total space occupied by a .7z vs. .rar vs .zip file format. As well, built into Windows 7, 8 and 10 File Explorer is a very easy to use compress/decompress .ZIP feature (only missing the ability to zip a file with a password but can unzip one already protected with one). Thus when I walk up to a PC to do a security audit and I see winrar or .7z installed I often can't tell where it came from (could be a rogue version with a well hidden virus escaping detection by all anti-viruses combined). Worse, .7z has been published for a long time without a digital certificate which lends itself to being tampered with for a virus to hide behind. It doesn't matter if the .7z source code is open source — there are not enough people with the man years and skillset to study it and look for well-hidden vulnerabilities. Anyway, what I have discovered is that companies or people who promote a .7z or .rar download are signaling that they are IMO security illiterate because (1) they have close to zero compelling reason for not using .ZIP format instead (recall disk space is no longer an issue for most) and (2) they choose to put customers at risk when they have to go hunt down a possibly rogue version of the winrar or 7z file not obtained directly from the publisher.

Regarding the attack surface: note we cannot audit Mr. Canboys firm to see if they are secure enough to be infiltrated and have their source code modified such as was discovered to have happened to Piriform's CCleaner a few years ago. CCleaner’s source code was modified my malware lurking for 6 months after a developer allowed the malware to enter his workstation via a work-from-home Teamviewer session. At the time, CCleaner was the most heavily downloaded software in the planet — and the breach was only discovered when Avast purchased ccleaner and studied the source code. So, I prefer not to worry about how secure the WinRar company is and keep it off the computer if possible and I use it to red-flag a company being security illiterate by forcing me to deal with finding the (yes, who cares!) FREE WinRar. For businesses or people who monitor their computers carefully or who have a security staff and where internally there are compelling reasons for using it, by all means purchase it and manage the risk. But don't force the average consumer to violate the principles of "Less Is More" )and to keep the attack surface to a minimum) by using .RAR or .7Z. Use .ZIP and Windows File Explorer instead. Thank you for your ears. The most important aspect of security is training and mentoring the end-user and I hope this benefits someone even if you disagree with me.
