What is the Cabinet? The Cabinet is a crucial governmental institution responsible for policymaking and the coordination of various government departments. Chaired by the Prime Minister, it includes the heads of most ministerial departments, along with a few additional members. Typically, during times of peace, the Cabinet comprises around 20 members. Is the Cabinet the same as the ministry? To clarify, the Cabinet plays a central role in the government’s decision-making process. It can consist of either the entire Ministry, which includes all government ministers, or a designated group of ministers chosen by the Prime Minister. This practice of selecting a specific group of ministers for the Cabinet has been followed by non-Labor Governments since 1956 and by Labor Governments since 1983.
